Lumen Labs
The workshop of a design language for human flourishing — light, line, life, measure, the human.
Lumen is built by probe: one controlled artifact at a time, each argued with, each decision codified here before the next begins. The method is the movement — deeply technical, deeply human, answerable to nature and to evidence. This page is the lab's memory: its law, its decisions, its specimens, and what enters the bench next.
i.The Law
Ornament earns its place only if it is data-bearing, structure-revealing, or nature-derived — never merely applied. Corollary of time: every mark lives in a shared temporal frame — nothing is drawn the same twice, and the light belongs to the hour.
ii.Decisions log
- REFUSEDThe Bauhaus reduction. Smoothness-as-virtue, ornament-as-crime, the human subtracted. Also refused: the neon drift — synchronized glow is a machine's signature, and cyberpunk is Bauhaus with the lights off.
- ANCHOREDPaper first. The primary ground is warm vellum with sepia ink; long reading lives in daylight. Darkness is an hour, not a worldview.
- ADOPTEDThe circadian registers. One language under four lights — morning, midday, evening, night — each with its own ground, ink, and working palette. Night is Plate I's bioluminance, demoted to its proper hour. The artifact knows what time its reader is in.
- ADOPTEDSix families, named from nature. Sky, Garden, Tropic, Iris, Forest, Desert — after Werner's Nomenclature. Each family carries one validated ink-grade (≥ 4.5:1 on paper) for text and data; the rest are wash-grade and may only fill.
- ADOPTEDThe hand, kept. Every stroke passes through a seeded tremor model — identical intent, unrepeatable execution. The system remembers the rule, never the stroke.
- ADOPTED4D, human-centric. The human figure returns as keystone (the heart, after Vesalius); everything alive moves in wallclock time; holding a moment stops the view, never the clock.
- OPENIris's job. "Accents, all hours" is unearned-rose wearing a new name — either iris gets a law or it leaves. Glow physics. The night register still blooms like a sign, not a sea — needs scattering and cursor-wake. One luminance curve. Register palettes are eyeballed; they should be derived from a single curve of the day.

v.Next at the bench
- The keystone figure. One spread where the thesis and the style are forced to meet: the heart (or the essay's strongest claim) carrying a real figure, a real chart, and one held moment — the essay's proof-of-style.
- Night, rebuilt. Bioluminance with honest physics: scattered light in a medium, stochastic flicker, response to the reader's touch like a wake through plankton. Kill the sign, keep the sea.
- A grammar of motion. Name the lab's three temporal modes — breath (rest), growth (reveal), pulse (data) — with speeds, easings, and the reduced-motion covenant.
- The essay page. Long-form template: measure of the text column, sidenote system, figure and caption spec, register switching at dawn and dusk.
